In Memorium – George Knies 1933-2014

Geo-Commodore-1984
It is with great sadness that we report our beloved friend and one of the founders of Treasure Island Yacht Club, George Knies, has passed over the bar. He passed away the morning of 30-July-2014 in his sleep at his home surrounded by his wife and family.
George was Commodore of TIYC in 1984, has served for a long time as the Corporate Secretary and also was the editor of the “JIBE” newsletter.
George was very active with the Navy League and the US Naval Sailing Association.  He was involved in getting the Navy 44 sailing vessel  “Courageous” to be berthed in Richmond, CA as part of the NROTC training for UC Berkeley.
(see http://www.navysailing.org/courageous.html)
In addition to being a distinguished carrier based Naval air pilot, George was an accomplished Marine lawyer. He has served as the PICYA legal committee chair and was the legal officer for the International Order of the Blue Gavel and recently he worked with the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary as well as local yachting associations.
George was a Certified Race Officer with the Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco Bay and a US Sailing, Senior Race Officer.  In addition he worked to bring the Tall Ships to visit San Francisco Bay.
George was the 2007 recipient of The Robert S. Olson Memorial Poseidon Award given by PICYA to recognize those persons who have performed outstanding service to the boating community.
If you would like to share a memory of George, please click on comments below.  We will share them with George’s family.

2014 Opening Day On The Bay – UPDATE

LATE BREAKING UPDATE:

I’ve waited to see if the forecast might improve, and it’s a bit better, but not good enough. While others may be out there, we won’t be. Rain and winds of 22 gusting 30 is not a recipe for a good time…and a low tide at 5pm when we return to the cove sealed the deal.

For reasons of weather and low participation, the TIYC Opening Day on the Bay cruise is hereby cancelled.

Sunday is a good day to stay home and watch sailing channel.

We’ll try again soon.

Will Smith

Hi,
Opening Day is less than a week away (Sunday, April 27, 2014).

Instead of doing the parade, we will participate in the blessing of the fleet in racoon straight (Corinthian YC) then cruise over to Sausalito to enjoy the afternoon wandering downtown.

9:30 Meet at the club
10:30 cruise to CYC (Raccoon Straight)
See the chart PICYA-fleet_bless_chart
See the CYC Flyer for the weekend here
Opening Day on the Bay Weekend _ Corinthian Yacht Club
11:00 – 12:30 Blessing of the Fleet (pass by the USS Potomac)
Noon high tide +5.4
12:00 Sausalito
3:30 head home
5:15 low tide +1.1

Should be a cool and refreshing day after several days of rain.

Bringing your boat? Please check in with me. 510-589-7410

Thanks,
Bill Smith

Proposed Barrier in False River

Protecting Water Supplies and Delta Water Quality with Emergency Drought Barriers

The California Department of Water Resources is planning to completely block False River (the short cut around Frank’s Tract) in the delta with a “temporary” emergency drought barrier to limit salt water intrusion by May 1, 2014.
